In short. According to our catalog pages, seven tools can remove a photo background: remove.bg, Photoroom, Canva AI, Craiyon, DeepAI, Grok Imagine and Figma AI. Only remove.bg is built purely for background removal, and Photoroom is made for product photos. You can start without signing up in Craiyon, DeepAI and the Photoroom website. Photoroom and Grok Imagine can also replace the background with another one, not just remove it.
The catalog has no separate "background removal" category, so we go through the tool pages one by one. We use only what a tool's page or the service's official page says.
Where to start
remove.bg is an online service that does one thing: it removes the background from a photo automatically and returns the subject on a transparent background. It has a brush to erase or restore parts of the cutout and a background generator. It is free for low-resolution images and personal use; high resolution and commercial use are paid. Besides the website there is a desktop app for Windows, Mac and Linux and a Photoshop extension.
Photoroom is an AI photo editor for product photos. It removes the background and replaces it with a white, colored or generated one, resizes for marketplaces, removes unwanted objects and processes many images at once. Background removal on the website needs no sign-up; the full set of features needs a subscription, with a free trial. There is an iPhone app.
Canva AI is the AI inside the Canva online editor. Background removal sits next to templates for posts, banners and presentations, so you can build a layout in the same editor right after. It has a free plan.
Craiyon is an image generator whose tools include background removal, upscaling and image-to-vector (SVG). It runs in the browser with no sign-up. A note from its page: images without a watermark need a paid plan, so check the result before you download.
DeepAI is a set of AI tools that includes a photo editor: background removal, colorizing old photos, upscaling. You can start without an account, and the free version shows ads. There are iPhone and Android apps.
Grok Imagine is the image and video generator inside Grok. Its ready-made scenarios include background removal and replacement, plus product photos and profile pictures. Free access terms are not filled in on its page, so check the plans page.
Figma AI is the AI inside Figma, the editor designers work in. Backgrounds are removed in the editor itself. The free plan includes AI credits, and their number is limited.
Which to pick
- Just remove the background: remove.bg.
- Product photos for a shop or marketplace: Photoroom.
- Quick and no sign-up: Craiyon, DeepAI or the Photoroom website.
- Remove the background and build a layout right away (a post, a banner, a presentation): Canva AI.
- Swap the background for another one and make a product photo or a portrait: Grok Imagine or Photoroom.
- You already work in Figma: Figma AI.
If you need to erase an unwanted object rather than the background, that is a different task: Kandinsky, Sber's model inside GigaChat, does it. Sign-in there is by Sber ID.
What this list does not cover
This list is about photos: backgrounds in video are removed by other tools, and they are not covered here.
How to check the result
- Zoom in on the edge of the cutout and compare it with the original photo.
- Check the size of the finished file: free-plan terms differ between services.
- If a watermark is left on the image, open the service's plans page and read the terms.
The data comes from our catalog pages as of 12 October 2026. If a service has changed its terms, tell us in the comments under the post in our Telegram channel, Pro AI Expertise (the channel is in Russian), and we will update the page.
