Description

Kimi K3.1 Pro is an open language model from Moonshot AI and the first model of the K3.1 series. It was post-trained from Kimi K3 with large-scale reinforcement learning, and the authors call it their most capable model of the 3-trillion-parameter class. It has about 2.8 trillion parameters, about 104 billion of them active at each step, and a context window of one million tokens. It reads text and images and answers in text. The authors name coding, 3D creation, financial research, factual accuracy and agentic tasks as the areas of improvement. The weights are stored in a compact MXFP4 format.

Reasoning depth is set per request: low, high or maximum, and maximum is the default. In multi-turn chats and tool calls, the full reply from the model, including its reasoning and tool calls, has to be passed back unchanged. The authors recommend running it with vLLM, SGLang or TokenSpeed. The card does not state hardware requirements; with this size it is a server-level model. The model is also available through the Moonshot AI API, which is compatible with the OpenAI and Anthropic formats.

The weights are public without any acceptance step. The Kimi K3.1 Pro License lets you use, change, fine-tune and sell the model for free, with conditions: keep the license notice; a business that gives others API-style access to the model and has revenue above the license threshold over 12 months needs a separate agreement with Moonshot AI; and a commercial product with more than 100 million monthly users or very large monthly revenue must show the name "Kimi K3.1-Pro" in its interface. Internal use and use through Moonshot AI's own products or certified partners are exempt from the last two rules. Because of these conditions we mark commercial use as limited. We found no territorial restrictions in the license text; read the license before use.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Open weights without an acceptance step
  • One million tokens of context; reads text and images
  • Reasoning depth: low, high or maximum
  • Aimed at coding, agent tasks and long sessions
  • Recipes for vLLM, SGLang and TokenSpeed; API compatible with OpenAI and Anthropic formats

Cons

  • Huge model: needs a serious server, not a home computer
  • The card does not state hardware requirements
  • License conditions: separate agreement for large API businesses, name display for very large products
  • The card lists only low, high and maximum thinking, with no way to switch it off
  • No video or audio input in the card

News about Kimi K3.1 Pro

  • Chinese AI firm Moonshot AI launches Kimi K3.1 Pro, scoring 55 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index — 4th globally, just 3 points behind Claude Opus 5.5. Massive 11-point jump over K3, driven by post-training compute. Leads in agentic tasks (GDPval-AA 1846 Elo), coding (Terminal-Bench 65.7%), 3D modeling (BenchCAD 92.7%), and office tasks. Same 2.8T params, 33% cheaper API ($2/M in, $10/M out). Weights planned for open release by Nov 2026 — would make it the top open-weights model, cutting the open-vs-prop gap from 12 to 3 pts. Cyber data stripped for safety. #MoonshotAI #KimiK3 #OpenWeights #AIbenchmark #LLM
  • Moonshot AI targets $2B annualized revenue by year-end, driven by its open-weight K3 model generating 300B tokens daily. Despite lower margins vs closed-weight rivals, the lab proves open-weight AI can still monetize—though it faces controversy over allegedly distilling Anthropic's Claude for K3 training. #MoonshotAI #OpenWeightAI #AIMarket #RevenueGrowth #TechNews
  • Moonshot AI targets $2B annualized revenue by year-end with its open-weight K3 model, doubling its August run rate. The goal highlights the financial potential of open-weight AI, though margins remain lower than closed-weight competitors. Meanwhile, Anthropic accused the lab of large-scale model distillation, routing nearly 300K requests to Claude Opus and collecting over 23 million responses for training. #MoonshotAI #OpenWeightAI #ModelDistillation #AIReward #K3
