Sora was OpenAI's video generator: it made short clips from a text prompt or an image.
When it closed. OpenAI announced the shutdown on March 24, 2026. According to the OpenAI Help Center, the Sora website and mobile app stopped working on April 26, 2026, and the API on September 24, 2026.
Why. OpenAI's own statement says the Sora research team will focus on world-simulation research for robotics. OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar put it more bluntly: the company faces a lack of compute. Disney also withdrew from its partnership with OpenAI; a Disney spokesperson said the company respects OpenAI's decision and will keep exploring AI in ways that protect creators' rights.
Users and data. OpenAI asked users to export their videos and images before the shutdown dates, after which the data is permanently deleted. The export instructions are in the OpenAI Help Center.
