In short. The Voice & Speech category has six services. ElevenLabs, Fish Audio, Murf AI and Narakeet read text aloud. You can clone your own voice in ElevenLabs and Fish Audio. Descript edits video as text, and Synthesizer V builds vocal parts from notes. Narakeet can be tried without registering.
The list below builds itself from the catalog and is sorted by our score.
We use only what our catalog pages say. Service terms change, so open the official page before you start.
What the services do
ElevenLabs is a speech synthesis service. It reads text aloud, clones voices, dubs videos into other languages, and makes sound effects and music. It works in the browser, and has the ElevenReader app and an API. There is a free plan, but with no commercial license and with ElevenLabs credited.
Fish Audio reads text aloud and clones voices. You set emotion and delivery with tags right in the text, such as [whispering], [laughing] or [pause]. There is a library of voices made by users in several languages. It works in the browser and has an API. You can start for free.
Murf AI is a voiceover studio for videos, e-learning, presentations and ads. It has voices in many languages, video dubbing, a voice changer for existing recordings and an API for voice agents. Free use is a trial only.
Narakeet is an online text-to-speech service. You pick a voice, paste text and download an MP3. You can try it for free without registering; see the site for the terms and limits. It also voices PowerPoint slides, converts speech to text and has an API.
Descript is a video editor where you cut by editing text. It has voice cloning and dubbing. The free plan adds a watermark. It is not built as a main tool for reading text aloud.
Synthesizer V is a program for vocal parts: you enter notes and lyrics. It is paid, with a trial version. It is not meant for reading ordinary text aloud.
If you need your own voice
Voice cloning is listed on the ElevenLabs and Fish Audio pages. Fish Audio clones your voice from a short recording. In Descript, voice cloning is built into the video editor.
